WIRD would like to thank all the volunteers and skaters that made the night a huge success!
The Cherry Bombers skated on the track first for introductions but it was the Bandaid Bandits that stole the show with a great zombie nurse routine. Once all the shenanigans were over and the teams got down to skating, the scores were very close with only a few points in it either way. The hits were solid and furious, the defending put up by WhiteHawk and Janis Job'em made sure it remained a close game despites Tracy Cyclone's best efforts. A barrel roll from AVO saw a direct hit to Demanders face! St Johns attended the injury, and Demander was back on the track a few jams later. The new skaters accounted themselves valiantly with solid blocking from both the Bandits and Cherry Bombers. At half time the Bandaid Bandits led by five points, but a solid clean hit from Unleashed saw Sredy, the star jammer of the Bandits leave the game with a knee injury. The Cherry Bombers took the opportunity with both hands and didnt let up. With DropBear at the jammer line, the Bombers walked the pack allowing the jammer to score a 15 point jam. At the last whistle the Bombers took the game over the Bandits, but the winner was clearly WIRD, with strong team players joining the league, ready to take on Sydney on the 11th of September at the Hordern Pavillion. Steel City Skate City - The Decider! |
Steel City Skate City - The Decider!
Wollongong Steel City Derby Dolls battled it out against Newcastle Dockyard Dames for the decider at the weekend (May 15), but it was Newcastle that claimed the Steel City title with a 130-114 victory. The night also paid tribute to the memory of Sydney Roller Derby skater Kendra Morgan (aka 2-Ton Teyla) who was hit and killed by a bus in Newtown earlier this month. With the walls of the Wollongong University Sports HUB scattered with posters of Ms Morgan and skaters and spectators adorned with pink armbands, both teams held up a bird of paradise – Ms Morgan’s favourite flower – as a sign of respect to the fallen roller girl. “We lost a mentor, friend and awesome derby skater; she will be sorely missed,” Wollongong jammer Kim Ocean said. From the first whistle, it was clear Wollongong had the better jammers – Tracy Cyclone and Kim Ocean skating rings around the competition with ease – but Newcastle proved it didn’t necessarily take speed to win the game but tactical skill. While the Dolls played an aggressive defence, the Dames focused their attention on sending Wollongong jammers to the penalty box with more strategic moves. Such tactics led Kim Ocean to be ejected from the first half at the 10-minute mark, followed by Tracy Cyclone in the last five minutes of the game. Despite this, Sredy and Penny Nartsy stepped in to jam, doing their best in keeping Wollongong within striking distance of a win. But with time already against them, it was Newcastle that took home the trophy. Congratulations to the Newcastle Dockyard Dames!

The Steel City Derby Dolls may have been defeated 131-117 in Round Two against the Newcastle Dockyard Dames last night, but it’s not over yet! Drawing nowhere near as many as last month’s 1200-strong home crowd, the two roller derby teams battled it out in Newcastle last night at the Gateshead Sports World complex. Newcastle obviously learnt their lesson from Round One’s bout in March when the Steel City Derby Dolls beat them in a landslide 175-127 score as this time around they played with more strategy and improved endurance that took the Dolls by surprise. Wollongong took an early lead at the start of the game. But by half time, Newcastle had taken control with a 55-65 score. Due to a knee injury sustained earlier in the week, Whitehawk was forced to pull out 24 hours prior to the competition, leaving the other half of Wollongong’s indestructible blocking duo, Shelby Unkonshus to deliver the Dockyard Dames some hard hits by herself. But fortunately Unkonshus had Demander 24/7 – this being her maiden bout – dived straight into the action knocking Newcastle’s indestructible Godjilla to the ground with a single heavy block. While it’s fortunate only bruised egos came to Wollongong, Newcastle wasn’t so lucky with Death Row Doll taking a heavy spill early in the game, forcing her out of the competition with a major knee injury. Although a disappointing end result for the Steel City Derby Dolls, fans are no doubt in for an electrifying final showdown at next month’s decider on Saturday, May 15 at Wollongong University Sports hub. Tickets are on sale now.
